The short answer: None.
The long(er) answer: Our curriculum recognizes the collective impacts of all members in society and champions their contributions. This future understands that there will be constant work toward a more perfect union and provides all learners with an authentic education focused on the diverse cultures of our world. We will center our curriculum development on justice and equity, highlighting the lost voices of the past in our readings, videos, and learning materials. We will enable every learner and their family to flourish by centering the instruction on their individual needs and progress. The team-effort in the child’s instruction will allow all voices to be heard and will focus on the child’s abilities and needs in order to succeed in their future. Our just future includes a curriculum as diverse as our world in voices and materials where every learner has the voice to determine their criteria for success. In order to achieve this outcome, the district will implement a K-12 curriculum audit on the current curriculum and use the data to develop a K-12 "glocal" (global/local) curriculum. The school will develop textbook-free, open-source materials that ensure a diversity of perspectives. The anticipated outcome of the measure is to have a curriculum materials and resources list that is universally-designed, diverse in audio, video, text, and physical materials and resources online. This idea addresses student issues by putting learners back at the center of learning and disabling the institutional mass-educational model.
CAL Charter School eliminates grade-level progressions for children and instead educates them based on their goals. The anticipated outcome is that the child will move fluidly among topics and subjects based on their Zone of Proximal Development. Children will not be limited to certain grade levels or school calendars and will be able to work at their own pace. For example, a 10-year old can be working on pre-algebra, reading at a 8-year-old “level”, spending their summer working on their heath, physical education, and geography projects, and will be able to express their educational goals and where they are in the progression.
The California Academy of Learning Charter School will allow each student to have an individualized educational experience that compliments their learning goals with their individual interests. CAL Charter School will provide an opportunity for students and their families to establish an education system with high expectations for all students and a relevant curriculum in the 21st Century that is not based on zip code or area of residence.
Parents and students will be highly involved in the overall learning experience. Parents and students will help guide the initial IEP for the student and they will also guide monthly discussions, determining the successes or challenges of the students’ learning.
